See circus in a cemetery or one of eight world premieres from the UK’s burgeoning contemporary circus scene this spring/summer. The National Centre for Circus Arts, one of the best circus schools in the world and the UK’s leading circus organization has announced where you can see its graduates and alumni with an extensive list of shows. The shows promise to be more than justspectacular performances, but an intimate encounter with the National Centre – the heart of the UK’s contemporary circus industry.
Kicking things off is the National Centre’s annual BA shows. Equivalent to the RA or St Martin’s degree shows, these sell out almost instantly and have developed a reputation for being the place to see the next big things in Circus. They present a rare opportunity to see students from the National Centre perform before they are snapped up by major international companies or form their own ones. - ‘Depart’ (BA Hons.& Postgraduate students) - (16 - 26 June) Haunting sights and sounds will seduce you down a path punctuated by unexpected encounters as you weave through the space between life and death in this East End cemetery… Led by Yaron Lifschitz with his internationally acclaimed company, Circa and with a creative team including the electronic musician Lapalux, this ethereal collaboration brings circus artists, choral singers, designers and musicians together for a summer night full of surprises. - At The Edge… (BA Hons.& Postgraduate students) - (16 - 19 March) The National Centre’s hugely popular annual postgraduate shows performed in their magnificent converted power station (www.nationalcircus.org.uk/attheedge)
Other performances taking place over the summer featuring National Centre students and graduates include:
- WOLRD PREMIERE from Barely Methodical Troupe with “Kin” (20-24 April). The headliner ofCircusFest 2016 BMT, present their latest show following the tremendous success of their debut Bromance. This is the hottest young Circus company in the UK and it’s made up of National Centre for Circus Arts graduates.
- Opening Act – Pop: A New Circus Concept: On top of what is expected to be a spellbinding new show, visitors attending “Kin” will be treated to a curtain-raiser from the National Centre for Circus Arts fusing music, narrative and circus
