Fight off the festive flab with a training course at the National Centre for Circus Arts in 2016. Proven to improve circulation, physical strength and confidence, there are several reasons why circus has become a popular way of staying in shape over the last year.

Celebrity fans Sadie Frost, Jason Gardiner and Lucy Mecklenburgh have all been put through their paces at the National Centre, the UK’s leading circus organisation, which offers classes to individuals, couples (including parents and children) or groups.

Participants on the National Centre’s one-day experience day or longer training programmes are able to experience a range of disciplines from flying trapeze and juggling through to acrobatic balancing and tight-wire walking. Classes are taught by some of the most talented circus performers in the world and take place in its beautiful converted Victorian power station based in the heart of Hoxton, East London.

Glen Stewart, Head of Training at the National Centre for Circus Arts said:

“People come to the National Centre for Circus Arts to escape the gym and participate in a form of exercise that’s both physically challenging but also huge fun. The diverse training that circus offers, from core and upper body strength to improving discipline and confidence, make it a truly well-rounded form of exercise. Unlike some other sports, Circus is not competitive, which psychologically can have a positive impact on participation and commitment. We find that once people sign up for our longer courses – they never want to leave!”

The national centre offers long and short courses for any age starting at £72 for an experience day. For those not in London, the Centre hosts a database of circus companies around the UK which can be found at: https://www.nationalcircus.org.uk/about/circus-in-the-uk
