TREAT YO’ SHELVES TO MARCH ACTIVITIES AT KIDZANIA: WORLD BOOK DAY AND SCIENCE WEEK
A sure fire way to get into your child’s good books, this March plan a trip to KidZania London, the indoor city run by kids at Westfield London, Shepherd’s Bush, to be transported into a world of literature and science with World Book Day and Science Week.
To celebrate World Book Day, KidZania London is hosting a celebration of literature, reading and writing in partnership with children’s publisher Little Tiger, to encourage children to develop their love of reading.
Industry experts, including a Fiction Designer and Book Editors, will be in the city to deliver literary workshops from cover design to character building. On Saturday 9 March, kids will also have the chance to meet best-selling, award-winning authors Tracey Corderoy and Holly Webb and get hands-on experience in their writing workshops.
Workshops have been designed to reflect the learning of Key Stage 1-3 English and Art & Design.
World Book Day (Wednesday 6 March, Thursday 7 March and Saturday 9 March) workshops include:
Cover Design Workshop with Fiction Designer: They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but when there are so many to choose from, how do publishers make sure their covers stand out from the crowd? Learn about how book jackets are created and help the art department design the cover for the next bestseller.
Story-Writing Workshops with Picture Book Editor: The best picture books are read again, and again, and again! Find out what makes a story exciting and help the editors take their characters on a brand-new adventure!
Character Building Workshop with Fiction Editor: The most engaging children’s book characters can become long running series, with readers eagerly awaiting their next adventure. Discuss the magic ingredients for a beloved character and help the editorial team conjure up a new hero.
Meet the author Tracey Corderoy (Saturday 9 March): What better way to celebrate World Book Day than by paying a visit to The One-Stop Story Shop? Join author Tracey Corderoy to find out where stories come from and follow Knight and Ferret on their adventures. Create your own One-Stop Story Shop sign to take home.
Meet the author Holly Webb (Saturday 9 March) : The Perfect Kitten is the latest of Holly Webb’s animal stories featuring cute kittens and adorable puppies. Holly has written over 100 books for children and was a book editor before she became a full-time writer. Join Holly for a writing workshop where she'll share her top tips for writing stories and celebrate World Book Day by creating a book cover starring your perfect pet.
Science Week (Wednesday 13 March – Sunday 17 March)
To bring Science Week to life, KidZania London is hosting activities with some of the very best in Science and Engineering, designed with the Key Stage 1-3 Science National Curriculum in mind.
As well as a partnership with Brooklands Museum, KidZania will be enhancing its existing programme of activities to ensure children learn the importance of Science in their daily lives. Workshops include:
The Science Behind Living Things
- Kids can become experts in veterinary care at the Pet Wellbeing Centre, where they will learn to identify and address animal welfare needs, as well as good pet nutrition in Lily’s Kitchen, and even perform surgery on a patient in PDSA’s Pet Hospital. Here kids will also learn about the different animal groups and the classification of animals
- Surgeons at the Hospital will learn how to save a life in the operating theatre. Using specialist medical equipment and tools, the team of young doctors will play an important role in helping patients work towards a quick and healthy recovery. Whilst learning the function of different body parts, organs, survival needs and good health, they will become an expert of the human body
How Science helps with Discovery and Crime
- In The Vault, kids will learn how to spot fake currency under a UV light, before working as a Vault Guards, where they will deliver and collect kidZos across the city
- As Forensic Scientists, kids will have the important job of providing scientific evidence which will be used to help the Police Department. Responding to the crimes that the police report across the city, Forensic Scientists will also collect & analyse evidence, including DNA samples and fingerprintsto solve a crime
Forces Show with Brooklands Museum – Saturday 16 March
- Join Brooklands Museum in the Theatre as they explore how forces work in real life with scientific experiments, and discover where we can see them in their fun and interactive Forces Show
Science Degree at the University of KidZania
At the University of KidZania, kids will be able to choose between two Science degrees:
- Social Science Degree in partnership with the charity Team Margot, helping to raise awareness about stem cell and bone marrow transplants
- Environmental Science Degree – kids will discover how the natural world works & how humans impact the environment
