Plastic is everywhere and it sucks. It fills up our oceans, endangers our wildlife and never goes away. Why aren’t the grown ups sorting it out? Adults may still be getting their heads around the war on plastic, but it’s the future generation like Greta Thunberg who have been leading the way to save our awesome blue planet. It’s time to take action and start inspiring even more kids to help cut down plastic use.
Together we can make a difference, and that’s why KidZania London is teaming up with musician and environmental activist Dougie Poynter, to bring his new book Plastic Sucks! You Can Make a Difference to life in the indoor city run by kids at Westfield London, Shepherd’s Bush.
Tying in with the launch of his new book on 5 September 2019, the McFly and McBusted bassist will host exclusive, one-off workshops on Saturday 14 September from 11am – 12:30pm, where four to 14-year-olds will learn how to become Recycling Champions at part of a Plastic Sucks! Degree. After enrolling in the University of KidZania, they will discover how we, as humans, impact the environment every day, and how they can take action to make the world a better place. Encouraging learning in Environmental Science, kids will look at the correct way to recycle plastic, metal and food, and learn where this ends up.
On finding his inspiration for the book, Dougie says, “Conservation has been a huge part of my life since I first learnt about deforestation at school. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world with my band and some of the sights we have seen were heart-breaking.”
“After a lot of research and campaigning to get harmful products banned, I learnt that the most impactful thing we could do was educate the next generation. I really believe we can get the earth back on track. What I plan to do with the book is to debunk a lot of rumours that may be out there and offer positive solutions.”
Victoria Gregory, General Manager at KidZania London, comments: “Dougie’s new book is without doubt the most inspiring, relatable book for kids around climate change. We love how it looks to empower the younger generation which is what we’re all about at KidZania, and do our bit to help inspire kids around important issues.”
Dougie’s Plastic Sucks! workshops will be included in the KidZania admission ticket, along with all of the other fun learning activities the city has to offer as part of the four-hour experience. KidZania London will continue to run the Plastic Sucks! Degree throughout September for planet-saving warriors that can’t make it on the day.
