Blackgang Chine, the UK's oldest theme park located on the picturesque Isle of Wight, is celebrating a major milestone this year - its 180th anniversary. The park first opened its doors to visitors in 1843, and since then has been providing generations of families with endless fun and excitement.

 

Over the past 180 years, Blackgang Chine has become an integral part of the Isle of Wight's tourism industry and has welcomed millions of visitors from across the UK and beyond. The park's history and heritage is as fascinating as it is varied. Originally a set of 'Chine' ravines carved into the cliffs by natural erosion, the area was developed into a pleasure garden with a focus on natural beauty and spectacle. Blackgang Chine soon became known for its quirky and unconventional attractions, from pirate ships and fairytale castles to giant bugs and dinosaurs.

Alexander Dabell, Managing Director of Blackgang Chine, grew up on the Isle of Wight and has been involved with the park his entire life. His family has owned and run Blackgang Chine since its inception, and he is proud to continue the tradition of providing families with unique and thrilling experiences.

Despite some setbacks, the park is prone to landslips and one with one of the biggest taking place in 1989, Blackgang Chine has continued to thrive and innovate, always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of theme parks. The addition of the new Extinction ride marks another era of innovation for the theme park, adding to its reputation as a unique and unforgettable destination.
